Check the Roof

One of the first things you want to check is the RV’s roof. You’ll want to make sure there aren’t any leaks in the roof. Any mold or rot inside the walls of the RV caused by a leaky roof can have an effect on the entire structure of the RV. Hidden mold can also have a negative effect on your health.

Trying to fix these issues can be expensive and time-consuming, so it’s always best to ensure the roof is in optimal shape before moving forward.

Inspect the Exterior Walls

Next, you’ll want to inspect the exterior walls of the RV. Take a quick survey of the exterior walls by walking around the RV, looking for cracks, holes, rust, bubbles, or bulges in the walls. Then, take a close look at the seams of the exterior.

Is the caulking and sealant in good condition? Is there any loose molding or mounting screws? The frame of the RV should be even and crack-free.

Test the Air Conditioning and Heating Systems

In order for your used RV to be liveable, you’ll need it to have a working air conditioning and heating system. Inspect the inside of the AC/heating unit for signs of leaks. You’ll also want to check the fan, wiring system, and electrical connections.

Run the AC and heat for about 15 minutes each to ensure they work properly.

Ask About the Gas and Plumbing

When you’re buying from a reputable RV dealer, like Keystone Cougar Half Ton, they’ll already have the RV’s LP gas system inspected before placing it up for sale. However, it’s never a bad idea to check it yourself just to be sure. Are the propane cylinders less than 10 years old?

Is the entire system free of propane leaks? Are there any leaks in the waste tank and is the water pump in good working condition? You should take the time to ensure the water heater works and that there are no leaks around any of the plumbing as well.

Make Buying a Used RV Simple

You can make buying a used RV simple by following the steps listed in this guide above. When you take the time to conduct a full inspection, you can ensure you’ve found a reliable, safe, and ideal RV for you and your family!
