Water Distillation: 3 Basic Steps for How to Distill Water

Water distillation removes 99.5 % of impurities from water. Knowing how to distill water is a life-saving skill during emergencies.

Water purity is dependent on the state of the environment. Having biohazard materials in the atmosphere results in acidic rain. More so, drainage pipes that lead straight to rivers introduce harmful materials in water bodies.

Another aspect that causes impurities in water is the holding container. If it falls on contaminated ground, it will most likely pollute a water source. It’s an endless vicious cycle.

Avoid contracting some diseases by purifying water before drinking it. Read through this brief overview on how to make distilled water in three simple steps.

1. Collection of Materials and Boiling

For this procedure, you will need to have a big pot with a concave lid. You will also need to get some ice cubes.

Worry less if you don’t have access to ice cubes. However, the distillation process will take much longer.

The third material is a glass bowl that is much smaller than the pot. It needs to float throughout the procedure.

Start by pouring water into the big pot. Use more water than you need to account for evaporation. If you are using rainwater, make sure to let it settle in a separate container for a while before using it.

Place the pot on medium heat and the boiling will remove any impurities in the water. These include elements such as calcium and iron. Thus, making distillation a method of softening water.

There are other methods in which softening of water can occur. It’s advisable to understand how a water softener works. Distillation will help you get rid of impurities in the water while softening will help you handle hard water.

2. Glass Bowl and Lid

Carefully place your glass bowl in the pot. Make sure it floats even after holding some water. If the glass bowl doesn’t float, you can use a small baking rack to hold it in place.

Take the lid and place it upside down on the pot. But before you do so, make sure that the water is boiling. The next step is to create a hot-cold barrier on the concave lid, by placing ice cubes on it.

You can replace the ice as soon as it melts. Having ice on the lid speeds up the distillation process.

3. Water Collection

You can take a sneak peek at the distillation process by lifting the lid. Let the water boil until the water in the glass bowl reaches the desired amount. Keep an eye on the apparatus to ensure your glass doesn’t sink or crack under the heat.

When you have enough water, turn off the heat. Let it cool for a while, and then remove the lid. Take your glass bowl and drain the water into a clean container.
