Watch Review: 3 of the Most Desired Maurice Lacroix Watches

Maurice Lacroix is mainly dedicated to the continued success of Swiss watchmaking by keeping its creative design and outstanding quality. The company’s core belief is encapsulated in the saying, “Success is a journey, not a destination.” With its 40 years of existence, Maurice Lacroix showed its capability to produce high-end timepieces that compete with other luxury brands.

The Swiss firm manufactures the superb watches and movements in their state-of-the-art Saignelégier factory, distributing watches to 3,300 selected retail locations worldwide. In addition to Britain and Germany, there are subsidiary companies in the United States under the Maurice Lacroix umbrella. It has its own workshops, factories, and facilities.

The “L’Atelier de Maurice Lacroix” is a unique network of designers, engineers, builders, and watchmakers that helps spark revolutionary ideas. This blend of knowledge and experience helps create the brand-defining designs for Maurice Lacroix’s range of collections.

A Brief History

In 1975, the Desco von Schulthess Company started making Maurice Lacroix timepieces in Saignelégier, Switzerland, where the company’s own cutting-edge workshops are located. When they purchased it, they were still undecided what name would represent the company. As French names were trending for luxury watches, they used one of their board member’s names, Maurice Lacroix.

All essential components for the successful manufacturing of Maurice Lacroix watches are in this place, including watchmaking talent, artistry, and high-performance technology. Over the years, the firm has earned fifteen notable honors for its timepieces and earned awards in the industry for its design and craftsmanship. The company grows and evolves to tell the time in different ways.

Maurice Lacroix started to design square gear wheels in 2010, stunning the people by the spinning square wheel on the dial.  Still living today, this Square Wheel remains a legend and other models that Maurice Lacroix produces. July 1, 2011, marked the date when Zurich-based DKSH purchased a controlling share in the Maurice Lacroix organization.

Some of the popular ambassadors of Maurice Lacroix are the English golfer Justin Rose and the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales. They also got an Asian ambassador in the person of Dicky Cheung while getting the famous TV journalist Leonid Parfenov for Russia.

Aikon Automatic

The 1990s Calypso watches inspired the Aikon collection. At first, Maurice Lacroix started to produce the quartz-powered Aikon ones and eventually led to manufacturing the Aikon Automatic in 2016. The overall design has a sophisticated look that you will instantly love the moment you see it. This 41mm watch has a stainless steel case and bracelet that underwent satin-brushing and a polished bezel.

Other great features include water resistance to 200m, sapphire crystal bezel with anti-reflective coating, and screwed case back in sapphire. When it comes to dial, it is a black sun-brushed Clous de Paris with rhodium-plated hands and indexes. It may look like a Royal Oak, but no, there are big differences. There’s a date window positioned at 3 o’clock, all the while the aesthetics create a minimalist appeal to the watch.

The white lume on the indexes, hour and minutes hands keep you posted of the time even in dark areas. The movement used is Caliber ML115, with perlage, 26 jewels, and Geneve stripes while keeping a 38-hour power reserve. It also helped that it comes with a strap changing system that needs no tool to swap with either a steel bracelet or leather strap.

Pontos Automatic Chronograph

If you happen to see this 2017 upgraded watch, you’ll find the design simply captures the modern classic style that is trending today. With the use of the rubber strap and monochromatic design, it’s definitely a knockout in your collection. The features include the matte black PVD lugs and case, the propeller-looking crown grip, and the Roman numerals around the tachymeter.

The watch has three subdials that showcase the seconds running, which is at the 9 o’clock position, the 30-minute counter at noon, and the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. Pontos Automatic has black and white-tipped minutes and hour hands, while the date window looks impressive inside the 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock location.

Like other luxury brands, the back case of this 43mm watch is a transparent sapphire crystal, screwed with five stainless steel screws. It runs with the caliber ML112 movement, which uses ETA/Valjoux 7750 for its base. This movement is by far the most famous Swiss automatic chronometer movement.

Les Classique Moonphase

Also called “Phase de Lune,” this Moonphase watch is a classic featuring luminous slender hands for its hours and minutes, with the blue one indicated for calendar days around the dial. The moon phase disc is finely crafted with a vibrant blue hue that expands radially toward midnight blue near the outside.

The case size is 40mm, which comes in stainless steel, finely brushed together with the polished bezel, pushers, and crown. It is self-winding, using the Caliber ML37, ETA 2824-2 ( almost close to COSC specs) with a 25-jewel movement beating at 28,800 vph. Another features to boast of is their use of the Incabloc Novodiac shock absorbers and the regulator ETACHRON.

To correct the dates with ease, all you have to do is use the pushers on the sides. The power reserve of this Moonphase runs through 38 hours up to +/-40 hours. Its strap is a durable black calfskin with an alligator leather design matching the polished stainless steel buckle.

Clearly, Maurice Lacroix is a timeless classic timepiece that you can wear on any occasion, be it formal or casual.
