Black slacks, a white shirt, a black jacket, and a tie. That’s what’s referred to as the corporate uniform across multiple cultures.
And while many industries are relaxing their dress codes, more traditional white-collar jobs are still stuck on the sport coat/blazer and tie combination.
If you’re looking for ways to make your formal business attire less boring without getting sent to HR, then this is the article for you.
We’re going over ways to accessorize your corporate uniform that are fun, easy to do, and work-appropriate.
Option 1: Fun Socks
If your office requires that women wear heels, then we’re sorry – this isn’t the tip for you. Even if you can wear nice flats, they’re not usually sock-friendly.
But if you wear dress shoes whose mouths are covered by the hem of your pants, wearing a crazy sock is a great way to feel like you have a little personality in your day-to-day wardrobe.
The only time anyone will ever see it is if you cross your legs in a meeting, but only if they’re not under the table. There are entire companies dedicated to creating fun dress socks – so do yourself a favor and spice up your sock drawer.
2. Lapel Pins
Lapel pins go back hundreds of years. They’re often called brooches, for women, but that term refers to more intricate and showy designs.
Lapel pin designs can range anywhere from cancer-awareness ribbons, to sport-team support, to personalized options like you can find at metalpromo.com.
They’re also great gifts or rewards for your employees if you have competitions around the office. You could make it a tradition to give them out, giving your employees something to collect.
They’re small, relatively inexpensive, and appropriate in all work settings (given you don’t get too crazy when you’re customizing).
3. Bold Pocket Squares
A pocket square is a piece (ok a square) of fabric that is folded and displayed in the lapel pocket of a sports coat or blazer. They’re usually marketed to men, but if you can find a women’s blazer with the right kind of pocket, there’s no reason everyone can’t rock one.
You can show your personality in your choice of pocket square, the way you choose to fold it, and the outfits you choose to wear it with. They’re also inexpensive and if you carry a purse, you can tie them around the strap as a fashion statement when you’re not wearing them.
How to Spice Up Formal Business Attire
We would all rather work from home in our PJs, or at least be able to wear our PJs to work. Those stretchy waistbands are decidedly better than having to wear pants with a belt.
But since we can’t do that (at least when we have to be in person), then we can use the tips above to make our formal business attire more fun and personalized.
